Keep on Keeping on

Live classes conclude this week. I would like to emphasize two things in this sentence : Live and conclude.

Live classes are not all encompassing. Learning is not limited to our live class. What a relief this is: To be reminded and supremely aware of the small part of our education that is known as "live class". We know from our reading, homework, experience in nature, social interactions, and work that learning and education are not limited to a classroom. As homeschoolers we may even argue that our best learning doesn't happen in a classroom, yet alone a zoom meeting. So our live classes conclude for a season. While I will miss hearing you and interacting together weekly, I know that your learning is continuing, and I take solace in the fact that you have learned how to learn well.

Conclude is an interesting word. End may be more succinct, but it sounds more eternal. Indeed the word end has many meanings. The oldest of which referring to the goal or fulfillment of a person or task. Have we reached the goal or fulfillment of math class? I certainly hope not. Mathematics is the study of the infinite God and His creation. Just as finite man cannot attain infinite God,  neither can he attain all of mathematics.  For, as Parmenides reminds us, God is unchanging, in a constant state of being, the great I am, while the only constant thing about man is that he is becoming, always searching, and never arriving. To conclude something may be to. stop but also to keep moving forward. Thus, we have concluded a great journey in the world of mathematics this year, but the quest is merely beginning.
