Flies on the Wall

What would I see if I was a fly on the wall of your homeschool?

When my children were younger I used to wish that my husband could see what I did all day. I felt that only then would he truly understand how difficult my days could be. Now that my husband works from home he is very aware of an average day in our homeschool. Which begs the question: what does he see?

Whether loud and messy, or quiet and organized, our home culture is reflected in the every day. Our priorities shine through from the day to day habits that we have built with our children. For example, my sons often start their day with mathematics. Honestly, I did not start this, but it is good practice. They see me prioritizing intense thinking skills in the morning and knowledge in the afternoon and model it. This isn’t always true for all of my boys, but it’s true for many of them. Our days are full of reading great books, writing essays, and thinking. This all takes time.

My temptation to multi-task and be efficient rather than focus exclusively on what God has placed in front of me becomes obvious when it’s in our children. Our habits are reflected back to us in our children and unfortunately, we don’t always like what we see. Most days I struggle with the gap between ideology and reality. Thankfully, God gives a greater grace, for He is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James).
