Greatness in the Light

Education and the pursuit of goodness, truth, and beauty encompasses all areas of life. We can't learn the language of creation without logic, and we can't learn writing without reading. Everything is connected. Because everything is created by God and as John tells us, Christ is in all and through all.

Many homeschoolers agree that life is interconnected, but then we go home, open a subject specific book, and try to learn science without math or handwriting without context. Why do we do this? Why do we segment things?

In our need to simplify we tend to compartmentalize things. This is both good and bad. Our desire to order things comes directly from a God of order, but sometimes we go too far and forget that God holds all things together, even things that seem unrelated. God himself has placed His image on us and given us the capacity to search His creation and learn. He has given us some of His greatness and called us to respond with obedience.

In light of epiphany and twelfth night from last week, let's recall this famous quote from the play of the same name:

But be not afraid of greatness: Some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.   - Shakespeare (Twelfth Night)
