I shared some tidbits of truth from the great Mathematician and Philosopher Nicomachus of Gerasa back in May of this year. At the time, I was diving into his short but important text "Introduction to Arithmetic". Why am I continuing to read and study ancient mathematicians? Because we are standing on the shoulders of giants. As John Adams is oft-quoted: "I must study war and politics that my sons may have the liberty to study mathematics and philosophy." Only free-people have the privilege to study mathematics and philosophy. This is why mathematics has historically been furthered during the golden age of Greece, the renaissance, or a culture's period of peace. To continue to study and read the mathematicians that each culture produced, we learn not only the foundation for our current math education, but also the foundation for a successful civilization.
