Lead Us Not Into Temptation
Are your kids glad you homeschool? Are you? I remember facing long, stressful days when my kids were little, trying to teach one to read, while working on math, while nursing a baby, etc. And many were the days I would call my good friend, who had been through it all, and told her I was ready to give up and send them to school. She, being sympathetic to my plight, but better than that; godly, calmly talked me off the ledge, and reminded me why we do it.
We have since moved, and my kids are older, and incidentally, we live right next door to the public school; elementary on the right, high school on the left. Yet I am not tempted in the least, and neither are my children. When we began this education journey, I had general standards for why we homeschool: I didn’t want to drop my kids off with people I didn’t know, I wanted them to learn the Bible, etc. All good reasons, but they aren’t compelling enough to stick with it when the going gets tough. And they aren’t compelling enough to face each day with genuine sacrificial love for the purpose of training our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
When we see the kids walk by our window, headed for the government school, we pity them, we pray for them, and we are thankful that we are knee-deep in the book of Deuteronomy and not neck-deep in the pool of unbelief.
We are glad we homeschool, and when we teach our children to love the standard, they are glad as well.
