Why Pattern Study?

We just spent months exploring the mind of one of the greatest pattern finders of all time: Pascal. By now, we may see how fun exploring a good pattern can be, but do we understand why we care about patterns? Let's examine a few reasons to pay attention to patterns:

Mathematicians : Perhaps the most obvious pattern finders. A pattern finder is by nature a problem solver. A person who spends time thinking and observing the world. Pattern finders don't simply see a pattern, they take time to truly watch a pattern unfold. Contemplating the movement of the earth has lead to many great discoveries and tools. Time keeping, for example, comes from the consistent movement of spheres.

Scientists : The theory testers of patterns. While a mathematician observes and proves a pattern using the language of mathematics, the scientist takes the pattern into the real world to see how it performs. Does the concept of a time keeper actually translate into an accurate machine for example?

Inventors : Tool creators for patterns. You've probably figured out by now that the theory and science need a common landing pad. The creations of man that represent a pattern and track it are the glory of inventors. To invent a tool that illustrates and tracks a pattern for the common man is a worthy task. That watch on your wrist wouldn't get past the sketch book without these great men and women.

Marketers : Communicating experts rely on habitual human behaviors. This seems like a stretch maybe, but it truly isn't. Actually a marketer isn't just a salesman or advertising agency, but a persuasive compelling communicator. Someone who not only knows what a watch does, but also why you may or may not benefit from it and when you may be compelled to own one yourself.

Investigators : Is there any greater problem solver than the detective? This great pattern finder can identify the overlap of various patterns and how they work or don't work well together. A person, who has learned to use a watch and knows how the patterns of time work together to solve the mystery, sees the overlap of disciplines and understands the world.

Obviously, I could go on and on about the various ways that humans have used patterns to see, create, and explain the world around us. Our journey to learning to be a great problem solver starts with our study of mathematics and language. Don't underestimate the power of a great math and writing education!
