Procedures for Math Problems

We've looked at ANI charts. We've started the procedure for systematically writing a great essay. What about math problems? Especially those pesky word problems? 

Working with a word problems is the unraveling of a great essay. Essentially, we take all of the information in the problem, filter it, draw it, organize it, and make conclusions from it. 

Here are the five questions to ask yourself when you are faced with a long winded problem: 

  1. What do I see?
  2. What do I know?
  3. What can I figure out?
  4. How are things related?
  5. What do they want me to figure out?

Here are some strategies to help you work through these questions: 

A. Read Slowly - one clause or phrase at a time

B. Write down numbers, important words, relationships as you read. 

C. Draw a picture

D. Look for Patterns

E. Begin with the end
