Editing Workshop : Preview

We are excit­ed to announce the devel­op­ment of our Edit­ing Work­shop course! 

The edit­ing work­shop con­sists of ten short record­ed lessons designed to walk your chil­dren through learn­ing how to self edit some key com­po­nents of their essays. 

This short course con­tains 4 lessons on the mechan­ics of a paper and 6 lessons focused on the style of the paper.  Both Aman­da Chick and Lori Smith take turns teach­ing the lessons allow­ing us to bring to the stu­dent our spe­cif­ic strength in writing.

The Edit­ing Work­shop : Outline

Mechan­ics :

• § 1: Spelling : learn how to improve and check the spelling of your paper by mas­ter­ing some of these basic spelling rules
• § 2 : Sen­tences : learn how to check your sen­tences by ensur­ing the each sen­tence has 5 key components.
• § 3 : Punc­tu­a­tion : learn how to clar­i­fy your writ­ing by uti­liz­ing end marks, com­mas, and quo­ta­tion marks correctly. 
• § 4 : For­mat­ting : learn how to for­mat your paper whether it’s an essay, nov­el, or research paper.

Style: 

• § 5 : Sen­tence Diver­si­ty 1 : learn how to engage your read­er more by diver­si­fy­ing your sen­tences with open­ings and vary­ing lengths.
• § 6 : Sen­tence Diver­si­ty 2 : learn how to fur­ther engage your read­er by adding claus­es and phrases. 
• § 7 : Redun­dan­cy : learn how to reduce bor­ing rep­e­ti­tions and use pre­cise language.
• § 8 : Descrip­tive Words : learn how and when to use adjec­tives and adverbs.
•  § 9 : Overused Words : learn how to reduce those too com­mon words. 
• § 10 : Strong Verbs : learn how to cre­ate excite­ment by replac­ing bor­ing verbs with strong verbs. 

Start­ing on Decem­ber 10^th, les­son 1 will be avail­able with each les­son fol­low­ing the sub­se­quent week after.  As always, Scio Acad­e­my mem­bers have unlim­it­ed access to this course for their entire household!
