Jacobs’ Elementary Algebra

Elementary Algebra 

Alge­bra is the foun­da­tion of upper lev­el math­e­mat­ics.  In Alge­bra we study lin­ear equa­tions, qua­drat­ic equa­tions, graph­ing, and solv­ing for the unknown. This course fol­lows Harold Jacobs’ icon­ic Alge­bra text as a par­ent-direct­ed stu­dent-led tutor-assist­ed inde­pen­dent study. 

Stu­dents com­plete Alge­bra by fol­low­ing the syllabus: 

1. register for class 

2. watch the recorded lesson videos

3. complete the homework assignments 

4. email any questions to your tutor

5. join live class for instruction and help

6. show completed work to parent for assessment

 

  • Pre­req­ui­sites:
    • Pre­Al­ge­bra
  • Mate­ri­als:
    • Ele­men­tary Alge­bra by Harold Jacobs (any edition) 
    • Graph paper

 

  • 2023 / 2024 has two classes working through Jacobs Elementary Algebra:
    1. Alge­bra 1 : A tra­di­tion­al alge­bra 1 course work­ing through the entire­ty of Jacobs
    2. Alge­bra 12 : A  class start­ing mid­way through the Jacobs text and mov­ing into Foer­ster Alge­bra 2.
