A Seat at the Table

Throughout our years of homeschooling, I have needed help more times than I can count. From my general insecurities as a teacher, to learning the rigorous Latin declensions, having a seasoned mentor to guide you is invaluable. So naturally, when we have a handle on things, we want to help those just starting out, or struggling.

But how should we help them?

If we don’t feel that we have a specific subject that we could teach with our eyes closed, can we contribute? Well, If your mission and vision for your home-school is to foster a love of truth, goodness, and beauty, and lead your children to God, then the answer is a resounding Yes!

I recently had a conversation with someone about exactly that, and this idea was described by suggesting that we invite students and parents to sit our table with us. To truly have a God-centered education, our homes should be a God-centered home. We lead by example. We lead them to Jesus and His design for our homes and educations. Multiplication mastery will come, but isn’t our desire to be seated at His table?

So in this coming school year, and as we plan for groups or co-ops or curriculum, stay focused on God and what He would have us do. And maybe pull up an extra chair for those who are trying to find their way.
