Are you struggling to choose an Algebra 1 text?
In our Math Masters group, I guide my students through both the Jacobs Algebra and the Art of Problem Solving Algebra texts because I feel that these two texts are some of the best available. Jacobs has always been the every man's text. Most every student of Algebra can conquer with the Jacobs text, while the AOPS text is more for STEM focused students. The AOPS text seems to glory in stumping their students and in the process creating some of the best problem solvers. That leaves little room for the classic Foerster text.
What about the Foerster text anyway?
I've had enough people ask me about Foerster's classic Algebra text that I simply had to pick up a used copy online. These books are hard to find mind you. I have the Algebra 2 Foerster text and consider it a solid choice for advanced algebra and trigonometry, but had never even glimpsed its predecessor. Honestly, I am pleasantly surprised with what I found in the Foerster's text. So much that I'd love to guide a group of students through this course as well. The Foerster text seems like a combination of the Jacobs and AOPS texts. That is, it's more challenging than Jacobs with a plethora of word problems, but it's less stump-worthy (is that a word) than the AOPS text. I liked it.
While I still recommend Jacobs for the average everyday student of Algebra, I now know that Foerster's text is a solid more advanced option for students. Check out my video review to get a glimpse of this classic and let me know what you think.
