Education is not a race. I had to tell myself this truth repeatedly throughout the year, and I think it’s finally starting to sink in. It is so easy to set goals for my children and then, despite my knowing different, pressure them and myself to “get it done”. This has been my approach to most areas of my life, and as the days are becoming a little longer, and we are able to branch out of our house a little more, I have loosened the reigns, and it has had a very positive effect.
My views about my kids’ education haven’t changed, but my method has. I, like all parents would like them to have a great education and the skills to pursue any calling that the Lord gives them, but knowledge isn’t everything. We have traded our textbooks for literature, and our pressure for peace.
The spring has finally arrived and if we spend the last week of school exploring God’s creation instead of rushing to finish our history, it will be worth it. There are certainly races to be running, but education takes time.
Pray that our children retain the love of learning, and their education will follow.
