It's everywhere:
- Are you on a Marie Kondo kick?
- Are you a minimalist?
- Are you a creative?
- Are you a classical educator?
- Montessori educator?
- Charlotte Mason?
- What number in the Enneagram are you?
- What's your Myers Briggs personality?
- Do you practice yoga?
- Drink the pink shake?
We identify ourselves as being a part of a larger group of people. It's not because we like to follow the crowds, because we actually long to be independent. It's because we like to feel as though we belong. We want to feel like we've found our place, our people. When we walk into a room and learn that, although the room is teeming with all different types of people, we all share a common interest, goal, purpose, personality: A piece of us thinks, 'Oh these are my people!'
When we don't find our people, we feel lost. We fear that we don't have a place in the world. Suddenly, being an independent person doesn't mean as much to us.
There is a deep longing within us to be a part of community: something that we discussed in one of our Educator Sessions last year. God lives in community with the Son and Holy Spirit and we live in community with the church. This church encompasses all Christ followers, everywhere in time and place.
Finding those christians who also happen to homeschool feels like a bonus. It is often difficult, but easier if you know where to look.
This, my friends, is why we attend conventions. It isn't all of the great books that we may see. Or even the wonderful talks, because you can get those online. It is to connect with other home educators in your area. All laughing at the same jokes, reading the same books, and trying to accomplish the same goals, these are your people. We are here online, yes, but we are also next door. Let's find each other and show the world what real community education looks like.
