Mathematics Curriculum Review Series : Principles of Mathematics

How often do you point your student to the Word while completing their math assignment?  If you struggle with connecting the math with God, then the Principles of Mathematics curriculum will be a breath of fresh air.

The Principles of Mathematics curriculum is a 2 year program designed as a pre algebra course for 6-8th graders.  Each level consists of a non-consumable text and a corresponding teacher guide.

The text is written directly to the student at their level for ease of comprehension and includes instructions aimed toward arithmetic mastery, worldview awareness, and the history of mathematicians.  Because of this three-fold integration, this math course book is one of the most unique pre algebra books available.

Throughout the text students will learn about how the math that they are learning was first discovered and how the continuity points to the creator of the bible.  The course text includes worldview sections pointing the student towards scripture and mathematicians' mini bios along the way.  The plethora of information included in the text is enough to make any christian mathematician want to sit and read.

The teacher guide is a consumable workbook which contains a very helpful schedule layout, including an accelerated schedule for completing both levels in one year, student worksheets for each of the lessons, quizzes, tests, and an answer key.

With the exception of quiz or test days, each day's assignment is designed for the student to read the lesson independently and complete the corresponding worksheet.  The worksheets are simple and cover the concepts covered in the lesson.  The directions are straightforward and the problems are often focused on real-life word problems.  Review problems are few and far between, but most of the chapters end with a quiz, which reviews all of the lessons in the chapter.

Overall, the Principles of Mathematics curriculum is a solid text introducing students in middle school to the what and why of the study of mathematics.  While the course could benefit from additional practice problems for each lesson, if introducing mathematics with a biblical worldview is important to you, then the Principles of Math fits the bill.
