Mathematics Curriculum Review Series : Math Lessons for a Living Education

Math Lessons for a Living Education is designed and marketed to Charlotte Mason educators.  What does that mean?  Basically, MLLE is designed to be an entertaining way to teach mathematic concepts to your children.  Charlotte Mason education tends to emphasize story telling and using what are called "living" books.  This math curriculum's goal is to introduce mathematics to students through the lens of being a "living" book.

Because of its focus, this math curriculum is unlike most that you will find on the market.  Each lesson is a story following Charlie and Charlotte on their adventures.  The story is engaging, interesting, and uses large vocabulary.  After reading the week's story, the student completes a short worksheet aimed at having the student practice the concept introduced.  The worksheets are clear and concise.

Activities are spread throughout the course with manipulatives that are easily created in the home or from the back of the book.  Because the Charlotte Mason technique includes strong relationships, these activities are designed to be completed with the aid of the teacher.  By building relationships with the teacher and the material, the student learns to engage mathematics in the world around him.

There are review lessons in the book and it is recommended that those be administered to the student as a quiz. Other than the quizzes, there are no other reviews.  There is a teacher guide for level 6 available which offers more quizzes and an answer key.

For students who struggle with the monotony of mathematics and have been raised with a Charlotte Mason education, this math book will help them bridge the gap from their right brain to the left.  For students who marvel in the beauty of the order of math or require a lot of practice to understand mathematical concepts, these books will miss the mark. The lessons are short and contain very few practice problems.

For students who've been burned out with math and need a new perspective, Math Lessons for a Living Education can offer them exactly what they need.  For students striving toward mastery, a supplement is recommended.
